Around Substack…
I wrote last week about how I’m spending a lot of time on Notes. I’m mostly procrastinating and engaging in deep conversations about whether binaural beats actually help with writing, but in the second half of the week I will share two or three job postings from the most recent newsletter. Follow me here for an occasional glimpse behind the paywall!
Substack Notes is not my only vice. If you’re anything like me, you spend more time reading about writing, than actually writing. But I promise you that
’s Stunning Sentences will absolutely change the way that you read. Her most recent post is an engrossing deep dive into one short sentence from The Maytrees by Annie Dillard. Schuyler writes (in a sentence that deserves its own deep analysis):I love the way Dillard begins her right-branching sentence, starting in the realm of the conventional or expected: “She had a decent education.” The reader is comfortable; the reader has heard this before. And then comes “and an ear.” Now, the reader is alert because of this unexpected and unfamiliar detail. The reader leans in attentively.
She also includes a short exercise at the end of the post. Well worth doing!
