Editorial World - Issue 23: Election-related opportunities, lots of AI training gigs, and a journalism role focused on all things Meta and Zuckerberg
The best non-pitch, remote-only, editorial jobs of the week. More than 100 vetted opportunities every month!
Around Substack…
How is everyone? I’ve been thinking about the 1980s and 1990s a lot lately – especially the sheer mental peace that we had without the constant presence of digital devices, social media, and endless emails and messages vying for our attention. Alex Michael recently wrote a wonderful piece — On Flip Phones and Finitude — about getting rid of his smartphone. I was struck by one paragraph that provides a small glimpse into what made our 80s/90s relatively digital-free life so meaningful and, yes, magical:
Rather than make a bunch of bold claims after two weeks, I’ll simply report what has happened during that time: I have stopped biting my nails. I’ve finished two books. I’ve meditated more than I have in the past six months. In two or three instances, when texting someone a long response with my flip phone seemed like too much of a pain in the ass, I have instead made phone calls that turned into wonderful conversations. I’ve spent hours sitting on the floor with Duke. I’ve gone on interstate drives with nothing but my thoughts. I’ve become better friends with myself.
It’s hard to believe that there was ever a time when our attention was mostly ours. It’s even harder to describe how it was to someone who wasn’t there.
You know that the paid version of this newsletter focuses on short-term, contract, and/or part-time gigs (all remote!) to help writers who want to build remote-work portfolios. So, this week I want to highlight Anna Mackenzie, who writes an immensely useful Substack (Anna Mack’s Stack) for anyone who wants to build a thriving portfolio career. Anna is currently running a survey to understand why people abandon the corporate ladder for the uncertainty of self-employment so if you have something to say or get off your chest, now is your chance:
